“継続は力なり” (Keizoku wa chikara nari) – Continuance (perseverance) is power.
Japanese Proverb
I’ve quoted this timeless Japanese proverb, and I will likely quote it again. Its wisdom cuts through the noise of our fast-paced world: success isn’t born from one-time heroics or fleeting bursts of effort. It’s forged in the quiet, relentless act of showing up—daily—doing the work, and staying the course, no matter what stands in your way.
This message feels almost rebellious in a culture obsessed with shortcuts, quick fixes, and instant gratification. We’re bombarded with promises of overnight success, viral fame, or the “one weird trick” to solve all our problems.
But the truth is more straightforward and far more profound: perseverance is the force that turns small, steady actions into remarkable results over time.
Stay the Course
What does it mean to live with perseverance? It’s not about grit for the sake of grit—it’s about intention, consistency, and a mindset that sees challenges as part of the journey. Here’s how to embody the Day Warrior spirit:
1. Consistency Beats Intensity
A single Herculean effort might feel good at the moment, but it’s the daily grind that builds lasting strength. One intense workout won’t transform your body, just as one late-night cram session won’t make you a scholar. The disciplined, repeated effort—however small—carves the path to mastery.
Takeaway: Commit to showing up, even when the steps feel modest. Progress lives in repetition.
2. Small Wins Compound
Every tiny victory matters. Writing a single page today might not feel like much, but do it daily, and by year’s end, you’ve got a book. Saving a few dollars now might seem trivial, but it’s a fortune over decades. Perseverance is the alchemy that turns the mundane into the extraordinary through the power of time and consistency.
Takeaway: Celebrate the small steps; they’re the building blocks of big dreams.
3. Challenges Refine You
Obstacles aren’t detours—they’re part of the road. Each hurdle you face and every setback you overcome shapes you into someone stronger, wiser, and more capable. The Day Warrior doesn’t avoid the storm; they learn to dance in the rain.
Takeaway: See challenges as teachers, not enemies. They’re forging your resilience.
4. Discipline Over Motivation
Motivation is a fickle friend—it flares up bright and bold, then vanishes when the going gets tough. Discipline, though? Discipline is the steady hand that keeps you moving forward, even on the days you’d rather stay in bed. It’s the quiet power that bridges the gap between wanting and achieving.
Takeaway: Build habits, not hype. Discipline is your anchor when motivation drifts away.
The Power of Perseverance in Action
“The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.”
Aristotle
Think of the bamboo stalk. It has grown underground, invisible to the world for years, building its roots. Then, in a matter of weeks, it shoots up dozens of feet. That sudden growth isn’t sudden at all—it’s the culmination of years of unseen persistence.
Your efforts might feel like that bamboo right now: slow, quiet, unglamorous. But every day you stay the course, you’re laying down roots. The breakthrough—the visible success—comes when the time is right, not when you demand it. Trust the process.
Back to my Japan example.
When my Japanese friends dropped me off at my dorm for the first time, even after years of learning Japanese in college, I could not understand what my dormitory Ryoshu (寮主-landlord) was saying! I thought the years of study had been wasted, but there was more underneath the surface, and with perseverance and consistency, my Japanese bloomed to a level that allowed me to obtain a job and supervise Japanese staff.
Perseverance vs. Consistency
I am not always the smartest lump on the log. I sometimes get mixed up when words have very similar meanings, and perseverance and consistency are two such words. I talk about both all the time. I am sure all my readers understand the difference, but for my benefit, I will spend a few paragraphs trying to define the distinction between the two clearly.
You might wonder: Are perseverance and consistency the same thing? They’re close cousins, often working hand in hand, but they’re not identical. Understanding their differences can sharpen how you apply them in your life.
- Consistency is the rhythm of action—the habit of showing up at the same time, in the same way, day after day. It’s the clockwork precision of running three miles every morning or writing 500 words before breakfast. Consistency thrives on routine and repetition, creating a foundation of reliability. I always talk about how I constantly hit 15,000 steps every day.
- Perseverance is the grit that keeps you going when the rhythm falters—when the alarm doesn’t go off, when the rain pours, or when life throws a curveball. It’s the resolve to push through setbacks, adapt, and keep moving forward, even when the path gets rocky. Recently, we have had extremely cold weather where I live. I also had a 101-degree fever. I still hit my 15,000 step goal for the day. My wife called it stupid. I called it perseverance.
Here’s the key difference: Consistency is about maintaining momentum in calm waters; perseverance is about navigating the storm. Consistency builds the habit, but perseverance ensures you don’t quit when the habit meets resistance. Together, they’re unstoppable—consistency lays the foundation, and perseverance holds the structure together when the storm winds blow.
Why is Perseverance So Important to Success
Perseverance isn’t just a nice-to-have trait—it’s the backbone of a successful life. Talent, luck, or opportunity might open doors, but perseverance carries you through them. Life is rarely a straight line; it’s a winding path filled with detours, dead ends, and steep climbs. Perseverance is what keeps you moving when the map fails and the destination feels out of reach.
Perseverance is the difference between giving up when the road becomes too difficult and pushing through and remaining consistent in your execution.
Here’s why it’s indispensable—and some real-world examples:
- It Builds Resilience: Success isn’t about avoiding failure; it’s about bouncing back from it. Do not fear failure. Learn from it. Embrace it. Modify your approach. Perseverance turns setbacks into stepping stones.
Example: Thomas Edison failed thousands of times before perfecting the light bulb—each flop was a lesson, not a defeat.
When I returned from Japan, I had to step back in my career. The thought that I was a failure did pop into my head, but I adjusted and pushed forward to find a position that nearly doubled my salary and scope of responsibility. - It Compounds Effort: Small actions, repeated over time, yield exponential results. Perseverance ensures you don’t stop before the magic happens.
Example: J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter over years of rejection and hardship, turning a quiet idea into a global phenomenon.
I started as a student in Japan. I could not even understand my Japanese landlord, but by embracing incremental, consistent improvements in my Japanese experience in Japan, not only did I establish a successful career, I started a small audio import business with $70,000 in sales in my first year! - It Outlasts Obstacles: Life throws curveballs—perseverance is the refusal to let them define you.
Example: Nelson Mandela endured 27 years in prison yet emerged to lead a nation, proving persistence can topple even the tallest walls.
I am highly responsible but sometimes mess up because I am not as organized as I should be. Years ago, I made a mistake when renewing my visa in Japan, which almost cost me my newly found job and entire career in Japan. It was my fault because I did not correctly interpret some rules around expiration dates on my visa. It was one of the scariest times in my life, but I persevered, owned up to my mistake, and pushed through the process of begging for forgiveness with Japanese immigration. I turned a failure into a learning experience that led to another sixteen years of success in Japan. - It Shapes Character: The struggle molds you into someone stronger and wiser. Perseverance isn’t just about the goal—it’s about who you become.
Example: Athletes like Serena Williams didn’t win 23 Grand Slams by talent alone; it was years of grueling practice and pushing past injuries. - It Defies Instant Gratification: In a world of quick fixes, perseverance bets on the long game—and wins.
Example: Warren Buffett built his wealth not through flashy gambles but through decades of disciplined, patient investing.
Honestly, I often fall victim to the instant gratification bandwagon. I love to buy the newest shiny object instead of investing as aggressively as I should. I have worked hard to persevere through these temptations to ensure my finances are sound and provide financial stability and safety for my family.
From Obstacles to Opportunities
Committing to continuous improvement doesn’t just get you through tough times—it transforms them. When you adopt the Day Warrior mindset, obstacles stop being roadblocks and become stepping stones. A missed deadline becomes a lesson in time management. A rejection becomes fuel to hone your craft. Goals don’t just stay dreams—they turn into realities, one disciplined step at a time.
I often use my 22 years of living in Japan as an example. The hardest thing about transitioning from a life in the United States to a life in Japan was overcoming the mental obstacles I had created in my mind. When I started to break those mental roadblocks into smaller actionable steps, the barriers collapsed, forward momentum was made, and I created a twenty-two-year journey of living and being successful in Japan.
Final Thoughts
“継続は力なり” (Keizoku wa chikara nari). Continuance is power. Stay focused. Stay disciplined. Trust in the strength of perseverance. The road might be long and the obstacles real, but every step forward brings you closer to the person you’re meant to become.
Until next time, keep fighting the good fight
