Dad Hack – Giving our kids time and attention without action is just observation

“Giving our kids time and attention without action is just observation.”

The Day Warrior

The greatest gift we can give our kids is our time. But what is time without presence? What is spending time with our kids if we’re not truly engaged?

I’d challenge this idea because attention is more focused than just time. Being physically there and paying attention seems like a slam dunk for a win, but I’d argue that intentional action is the real currency.

Why Presence and Time Alone Aren’t Enough

I always thought time was the best gift from a father.

But time spent with my kids while my head is buried in my phone is not a gift.

  • Time is Passive: Being in the same room doesn’t mean you’re truly with them. If you’re scrolling your phone while they play, you’re present—but not engaged.
  • Attention is Reactive: Listening to them, responding when they talk, and acknowledging them is a step up, but it still lacks intentional effort.
  • Action is Transformative: Playing with them, teaching them something new, and creating shared experiences leave a lasting impact.

How to Be More Intentional

There is no fixed formula for being more intentional with your family; all situations have unique challenges.

Embrace the challenges, overcome them and become best father you can.

Here are a few hints:

  • Put Distractions Away: Set your phone down, turn off notifications, and give your child your complete focus.
  • Engage in Their Interests: Whether it’s Legos, video games, sports, or drawing, get involved in what they love. My kids love FortNite and they kick my butt each time I try to play.
  • Create Small Rituals: Daily walks, bedtime stories, weekend breakfast traditions—these small habits build deep connections.
  • Ask and Listen: Instead of just asking “How was your day?” try “What was the best part of your day?” or “What’s something fun you learned?”
  • Lead by Example: Show them that action matters by being proactive in your life—whether it’s fitness, learning, or pursuing goals.

Final Thought

Our kids won’t remember the hours we sat near them, but they’ll never forget the moments we moved with them.

If we truly want to give them our best, we need to turn time + attention into action.
